Rather than pay thousands of dollars to a branding firm, Microsoft used its own employees to a great extent to develop the new logo. The colors in the new graphic represent the company’s diverse products, and the shape is reminiscent of the Windows icon. But is this enough? Some of the reviews we’ve seen think it works while others feel that it should have been more polished and unique.
A strong brand stands out among the competition and instills loyalty and trust in its customers. In general, it’s a good idea to refresh a logo (corporate identity) when a company is moving in a different direction or trying to reach a higher level of business. It’s important for an identity to look fresh and relevant as the business grows and trends change. The key is to make an improvement that will both give the company a boost and keep its current customers engaged. Does Microsoft hit these marks?
